What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a doctor that attends to the matters of the foot. They preform surgeries, diagnose and treat infections, and take care of the overall wellness of the feet. In order to become a podiatrist you must get a bachelor's degree and prepare for the transition into pediatric medical school by taking the MCAT and applying to various medical schools. Once admitted, your medical school journey will take four years, after which you will receive your D.P.M. (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree). Following this, doctors must complete a 2-3 year residency in order to receive their license to practice podiatry. There are areas of specialty within this role, however. Some examples include: Forensic podiatry, dermatological podiatry, neuropodiatry, and diagnostic podoradiology. The average salary for a United States podiatrist is about $137,480.
