What is an Anesthesiologist?

Anesthesiologists are doctors who administer anesthetics and develop anesthetic plans. They’re the people who put you “to sleep” during an operation. These people finish college, attend a four year medical school, followed with a year long internship, and a 3 year residency. Some anesthesiologists choose to take more years of training in a fellowship. Their main role is to make sure the patients are safe during surgery. Common tools used are general anesthesia (putting the patient to sleep), sedation (calming the patient), or regional anesthesia (injecting into nerves to numb an area of the body). Anesthesiologists will choose what tool would be best for you and create a plan. They want to make sure you get through surgery safely and avoid pain after surgery. It is important that the anesthesiologists stay throughout the whole surgery to ensure that heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and level of awareness are under control.

Anesthesiology is a necessary field of medicine and it is often not recognized for its importance in a procedure.
