What is Dentistry?

Dentistry, or oral medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the mouth. It's relating to the structures and tissues, in the jaw and facial area. Primarily associated with teeth, the field of dentistry is not limited to teeth but other aspects of the mouth such as the gums, root canals, feelings, crowns, etc. All practicing general dentists have earned either a DDS or a DMD degree (Doctor of dental surgery or doctor of dental medicine). Majority of programs require at least 90 credits. It takes about eight years to become a dentist; four years to earn a bachelors degree and four years to earn a DDS or DMD. If you're interested in specializing you'll need to complete a dental residency. The mouth is the entryway to the rest of the body, so dentistry prevents diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Dental treatments are carried out by a dental team, which often consists of a dentist and dental assistant, dental hygienist, dental technicians, as well as dental therapists. They mostly work in private practices, dental hospitals, or institutions.
