What is Emergency Medicine?

Emergency medicine is the specialty concerned with treating patients who are acutely ill with urgent healthcare needs. These physicians are able to treat acute conditions like myocardial infarctions, heart attacks, treating exacerbations of chronic health conditions, stabilizing patients involved in trauma, and more. There are many subspecialties in emergency medicine. To specialize you will need to complete a fellowship in the said specialty. Some subspecialties in emergency medicine include sports medicine, wilderness medicine, ultrasound, toxicology, pediatrics, hyper baric medicine, and emergency medical services (EMS). Compensation amongst emergency medicine doctors is highly variable on the region and type of hospital you're practicing at. that being said, the average EM doctor makes roughly $350,000 per year. Emergency medicine is also unique because the more patients you see and the more hours you work, the higher your compensation.
